Abstract: The lecture will use historical and current examples, mainly from the technology sector, to show how having good knowledge of business processes and good ideas might not be enough to succeed in business, both managing established businesses or starting up a new one. Through these situations, the talk will explore what is the relationship between law and business operations, and what aspects of law are the exclusive domain of lawyers, and which ones need to be known by business people.

The references are designed to show that conducting a thriving business is, partially, know how to assess and deal with existing risks, and legal risks are some of them.  The understanding of the legal and regulatory framework has as one of the purposes to minimise the legal risks and to avoid situations where in existent risks are created by designing  business ignoring the regulatory constraints.


Speaker’s Profile: Dr. Fernando Barrio joined Queen Mary University of London in 2018 as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Business Administration and Law, Previously he was General Professor of Cyber Law and Legal Director at the Universidad Nacional de Rio Negro in Argentina. He is currently a senior lecturer in Business Law at SBM. The most prominent topics in Dr. Fernando Barrio's academic research and public engagement experience are the global regulation of information technology, intellectual property, human rights, and their application in different industries and businesses. Currently, Fernando focuses on agri-food and agribusiness regulation, particularly on legal and policy issues related to smart agriculture and biotechnology, climate change and sustainability related business regulatory frameworks, and community resilience policies.
